Parent Information Prior to Sedation Appointment

Please read and understand these important instructions before your child’s appointment:

  • A physical exam will be performed by one of our providers prior to all sedations
  • Have your child drink about 8 oz of apple juice or Gatorade at midnight
  • Nothing (not even water or chewing gum) to eat or drink after midnight the day before the procedure.
  • To reduce the possibility of drinking water, do not brush your child’s teeth the day of treatment.
  • It helps if your child stays up as late as possible the night before their appointment
  • We recommend you bathe your child and brush their teeth the night before
  • Dress your child in loose-fitting clothes or their favorite PJs with short sleeves.
  • Wake them up only when you are ready to leave the house- this reduces any chance of them sneaking a snack
  • They may bring a blanket, pillow, stuffed animal, or a book for comfort (we will provide if needed)
  • If your child has any type of nail polish on their big toes, thumb, or index fingers, it is important to have it removed prior to your child’s appointment.
  • Your child will require close supervision by a responsible adult (who must be present at the time of discharge) all day and cannot return to regular activities/school on the day of treatment.
  • Your child will still be mildly sedated the rest of the day. It is strongly recommended they go directly home.
  • Please be aware that your child’s appointment may last all morning. They will only be discharged after they have met the discharge criteria. This includes being alert, able to hold their head up, and able to drink and walk (if applicable) unassisted.
  • It is highly recommended that a second adult travel with you to watch your child during the ride home. Otherwise, you must ensure they stay awake the entire trip home.
  • Though you may want to “fast” with your child, we suggest that you have a snack before waking them up. Your child will be given a drink/popsicle at the end of treatment.
  • Do not give Motrin/Tylenol before coming. If needed, it will be given at our office.
  • The child’s legal guardian must be present and plan to stay the entire morning of the appointment. If you are unable to bring your child, you must contact our office no later than 48 hours prior to treatment to sign the sedation and treatment consents. An authorization form must be filled out for the responsible adult you choose to accompany your child. The responsible adult must show a form of identification at check in.
  • Please call our office (210-306-4271) if you have any questions or concerns pertaining to your child’s treatment at least 48 hours before your appointment. For more information about treatment with oral sedation, go to www.aapd.org and hover over the Resource Center and click on Parent Resources, and then Sedation.

We block out 4 hours in our schedule to provide the best care for your child. It is important to confirm or give us a 48-hour notice if you have to cancel your appointment, otherwise, you will be charged a $100 cancellation fee.
